Schools/Instruction

Learning to sail properly and efficiently is very important. This gives you confidence competence and knowledge. I have myself seen many cruisers out on the water passage making, who had no idea of sail trim, and could easily with sail adjustment have obtained at least a quarter of a knot more speed. The less time on the open ocean the safer you are. I do not recommend just learning from friends, who although well meaning are not trained to teach correctly.

I do believe in wives and partners learning separately, as each person developes their own strengths and confidence that way and it makes for a more balanced partnership.and better ability individual assessments and decisions quickly if on watch alone. It is important to be as equal in as many areas as possible.

  • Modern Sailing Academy
Comes high on the ASA training list. San Francisco Bay offers a good variety of conditions in which to learn. Winds can be strong at times and give you good experience. Head honcho and top notch sailor John Connelly takes qualified students offshore for further experience in many parts of the world. This school also offers some of the best safety at sea training available.

    Marine Surveyors
A good survey is one of the most important parts of buying a boat. You should never consider purchasing without a survey. These surveyors are recommended for their very thorough and detailed surveys. All are willing to travel. A good survey can save you a lot of money and heartache by finding any problems and work that needs to be addressed. Many times these are things that are not apparent to the untrained eye.

    Wind Vanes
The design of your stern has a lot to say about the vane that you choose. Several are on the market; most are tried and true. Those mentioned here are strong units which have been tried by serious cruisers.
  • Aries Vane Gears. If you look around, it's still possible to get original parts second hand. (Also see Aries Denmark).
  • Scanmar International is home of the Monitor Wind Vane and one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers for self steering and wind vane equipment.
  • Hydrovane are specialists in self steering navigation systems for sailboats. Strong and efficient, Hydrovane has been on the market for many years, is well-known to serious cruisers and is now getting the publicity it has needed.
  • Cape Horn is not so well known but well worth looking at. Strong, simple, efficient and, like the Hydrovane, it gives you a spare rudder.
